Messi's four-goal haul guarantees his spot in the Euro best XI

Lionel Messi ended his four-match goal drought in fine fashion as he netted four times in Barcelona's 5-0 win over Eibar. The victory sets up next week's Clasico nicely after Real Madrid dropped points on Saturday evening, while in Germany; title chasing pair RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich both feature in the WhoScored.com European team of the week after respective wins... 

Goalkeeper: Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim) - 8.85 rating 

Hoffenheim held title chasing Gladbach to a 1-1 draw at the weekend and have Oliver Baumann to thank for the away point. The 29-year-old made nine saves in the stalemate, that one of the better returns in a Bundesliga match this season, including one penalty stop in a man of the match showing, to dent the home side's push for glory. Two successful high claims, two clearances and three accurate long balls saw Baumann make the grade between the sticks with a WhoScored rating of 8.85. 

Right-back: Dimitri Foulquier (Granada) - 8.38 rating 

Granada earned a surprise 3-0 win at Osasuna on Sunday, ending an eight-match away losing run in the process. The game as a contest was over by half time, with Dimitri Foulquier putting the cherry on the icing of the cake that was their away triumph. His first league goal of the season came from his only shot in the win, while four clearances, four tackles and one interception saw the defender land a WhoScored rating of 8.38 in a clean-sheet attaining display. 

Centre-back: Marcel Halstenberg (RB Leipzig) - 8.62 rating 

RB Leipzig kept pace with Bayern Munich at the top of the table with a resounding 5-0 win at Schalke. Defender Marcel Halstenberg is the first of two RB Leipzig representatives as the Germany international earned a WhoScored rating of 8.62 in the away victory. The 28-year-old notched his third league goal of the season on Saturday, that coming from his only shot in the clash, while four interceptions and one tackle contributed towards his inclusion in the European team of the week. 

Centre-back: Guillermo Maripan (Monaco) - 8.57 rating 

Monaco maintained their push for a top-four finish with a 1-1 draw at Dijon at the weekend with summer arrival Guillermo Maripan playing a starring role. The Chilean centre-back netted just his second league goal of the season in the draw, with his strike coming from two shots. The defender also won seven aerial duels, made seven clearances, four tackles and three interceptions to secure his place in this XI with a WhoScored rating of 8.57. 

Left-back: Patrick van Aanholt (Crystal Palace) - 8.43 rating 

Crystal Palace earned a crucial three points to end a seven-match winless run at Newcastle's expense on Saturday, with Patrick van Aanholt decisive in the 1-0 win. The Dutch left-back bagged the only goal of the game, his third league goal of the season, from two shots. Van Aanholt could've had an assist in the game, too, as he made six key passes, in a match he pushed forward well in to help earn a WhoScored rating of 8.43. 

Right midfield: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 10.0 rating 

Our European player of the week, Lionel Messi had endured a four-game goalless run prior to Barcelona's welcome of Eibar on Saturday, but ended that streak in fine fashion as he netted four goals from five shots in a 5-0 win. The Argentine earned a perfect WhoScored 10 rating in the home victory, the sixth such time he has secured that rating, in what was his 12th man of the match performance of the campaign. 

Central midfield: Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig) - 9.94 rating 

The second RB Leipzig star to feature in this XI, Christopher Nkunku became the first player since 2012 to register four assists in a Bundesliga match as he excelled against Schalke. The Frenchman's four assists came from nine key passes, that a record in a Bundesliga game this season, while Nkunku retained possession well, too, as 94.3% of his 35 passes found a teammate. Three interceptions and one tackle helped the youngster to a WhoScored rating of 9.94. 

Central midfield: Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 9.73 rating 

Hans-Dieter Flick used a three-man defence in Bayern Munich's 3-2 win over Paderborn on Friday night and while the victory was closer than many would have expected before kick off, the setup benefitted Serge Gnabry more than most. The Germany international secured the WhoScored man of the match award with a 9.73 rating as he had a direct hand in all three Bayern goals, scoring one from two shots and providing two assists from three key passes. An additional five successful dribbles earned Gnabry his spot in this XI. 

Left midfield: Dwight McNeil (Burnley) - 9.32 rating 

With a WhoScored rating of 9.32, Dwight McNeil is the WhoScored Premier League player of the week. The Burnley winger had a direct hand in two of the three goals the Clarets netted in their comfortable 3-0 win over Bournemouth. The 20-year-old's goal came from three shots and his one assist from three key passes to help land a place in the European team of the week. 

Striker: Jhon Cordoba (FC Koln) - 9.98 rating 

FC Koln bounced back from their home 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in fine fashion as they romped to a 5-0 win at Hertha Berlin on Saturday. Jhon Cordoba maintained his excellent goalscoring record as the Colombian notched a brace in the capital and provided one assist to help garner a WhoScored rating of 9.98. His two goals came from four shots and assist from two key passes, while two successful dribbles and three aerial duels won capped a fine showing. 

Striker: Edin Dzeko (Roma) - 9.85 rating 

Rounding off the XI is Roma striker Edin Dzeko as the Rome outfit made light work of Lecce on home turf, romping to a 4-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico. The experienced striker netted his 12th league goal of the season in the victory, and wasn't afraid of chancing his luck as he mustered nine shots. Meanwhile, one of three key passes resulted in Dzeko's fourth league assist of the season, while four successful dribbles yielded a WhoScored rating of 9.85.
