Team News

Atletico
Granada
  • Handpicked Premier League stars Çaglar Söyüncü and César Azpilicueta will almost certainly start against Granada; a much needed injection of experience and reliability into Simeone's eleven.
  • Atletico are without defenders Reinildo and José Giménez who still remain unfit following their injuries from last season.
  • Since he was rumoured to join Juventus for a third spell, Alvaro Morata will now be offered a new contract by the club, and he could feature, but Depay and Griezmann have been the favoured attacking duo in pre-season.
  • No sign of João Felix, as he remains isolated from the first team and has recently expressed is desire to join Barcelona, per reports.
  • Granada have secured another year's loan deal for promising Real Madrid defender Jesus Vallejo, who will no doubt be an important asset to Los Carmenes' survival hopes.
  • Esteemed forward Josè Callejón is fit and ready to make his return to La Liga, having featured for Real Madrid and Espanyol in the past.
  • Albanian striker Myrto Uzuni will have even bigger boots to fill this season due to Jorge Molina's absence after the 41-year-old retired at the end of last season.

Prediction

  • Although Granada were crowned 2022/23 Segunda Division champions, they are likely to face heavy artillery in their opening game of the season against Atletico Madrid.
  • Atleti are a force to be reckoned with when playing at home, with 68% of all their victories last season coming when playing at the Wanda Metropolitano. When looking at Simeone's side's outgoings, excluding Geoffrey Kondogbia, the club have managed to hold on to all of their important assets while moving on fringe players like Matheus Cunha for upwards of €50m.
  • Atletico are the bookies' favourites to disrupt the battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona this season, and Granada will have to bed in to their return to La Liga quickly if they want a chance of salvaging a result.
