Team News

Villarreal
Barcelona
  • New signing from Blackburn Ben Brereton Díaz made his full debut for the club in their first victory of the season against Mallorca last Friday, and he Chilean should keep his place in Setien's XI.
  • Matteo Gabbia, who last week replaced Aissa Mandi at centre-back, should keep his place in the team going forward. The AC Milan loanee was able to help his side keep a clean sheet on his debut.
  • Barcelona tweaked their formation to a 3-4-2-1 to beat Cadiz 2-0 at home last week and could well stick with that come Sunday.
  • 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, who Xavi and the club hold in extremely high regard, played off the right flank and is likely to keep his place against Villarreal.
  • Both boss Xavi and winger Raphinha will be absent for the game on Sunday, serving the final match ban of their respective suspensions.
  • Barcelona are still working on signing Joao Cancelo from Manchester City. It is unlikely he will feature this weekend if the deal is completed this week.
  • The club reported on Twitter on Wednesday that Pedri has sustained an injury, but it is unclear whether he will be fit to start on Sunday.

Prediction

  • Villarreal face a considerable test at el Estadi de la Cerámica on Sunday, welcoming La Liga holders Barcelona, who they have only managed to beat once in the last ten matches between each other.
  • Barcelona, who looked shaky in their first outing against Getafe, before dispatching Cadiz at the second time of asking, look now to kick on and cause damage at the hands of their new-look, youthful setup. The visitors are also one of only two teams in the league yet to concede a goal. Villarreal kept a clean sheet last week and look good defensively, so Sunday's match will most likely be tight and attritional on both sides.
  • Barcelona, though, will likely face a challenge - if they do stick with three at the back - from the wide spaces as Gerard Moreno and Alexander Sørloth are deadly in poacher situations following balls into the box. Likewise, the hosts' defence will have to come out 100% disciplined to deal with the magic of Gavi and Pedri, provided the latter is fit.
