Team News

Motherwell
Celtic
  • Stuart Kettlewell named just one change from Motherwell's 1-0 defeat against St Mirren at Fir Park, before they fell to another loss at Ibrox against Rangers by the same scoreline.
  • Paul McGinn was sent off after two yellow cards in the win at Tynecastle, so missed the match against St Mirren. Shane Blaney had previously replaced him, to accompany Bevis Mugabi and Dan Casey in the Well's back three.
  • Stephen O'Donnell and Brodie Spencer continued at right and left wing-back respectively. Harry Paton and Lennon Miller started in Motherwell's midfield once again with Callum Slattery and Blair Spittal supporting lone striker Theo Bair.
  • Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers made one change to the Celts side that lost their Champions League opener 2-0 to Dutch side Feyenoord in Rotterdam, before responding with a 3-0 victory away to Livingston last Saturday lunchtime.
  • Joe Hart received the first red card of his career against Livi, so Scott Bain will start between the sticks. Greg Taylor, Liam Scales, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Alistair Johnston continued as the back four in front of either goalkeeper.
  • James Forrest replaced Luis Palma to start in West Lothian, but he was the player sacrificed for goalkeeper Bain to take to the field. Despite Celtic's numerical disadvantage, they went on to score a further two goals and claim three points.

Prediction

  • Neither Motherwell nor Celtic played in midweek, both previously disappointed with their early Scottish League Cup exits, so have had a week to prepare for their Scottish Premiership meeting.
  • The Well are also aggrieved at having picked up no points, failing to score a goal, in their last two Scottish Premiership games. Two 1-0 defeats to St Mirren and Rangers respectively have been hard to take, and the Steelmen will believe that they could've and should've recorded better results. They'd love to get back to winning ways here, at home against the league leaders, this weekend.
  • As for Celtic, their European campaign didn't get off to the ideal start but they responded superbly on the domestic front. Despite having to play away at Livingston with ten men for over an hour, they scored a further twice - despite the numerical disadvantage - and comfortably beat a side that have previously posed them problems. They could apply further pressure to Rangers with a win.
  • Motherwell claimed a point at Parkhead in April but lost their other two league matches to Celtic 2-1 last season. The Well will need to rediscover their goalscoring touch if they're to stand any chance against the Hoops here.
