Team News

Celtic
Ross County
  • Brendan Rodgers' second spell in charge of Celtic begins, as the reigning champions host a Ross County side that staved off the drop courtesy of a remarkable comeback in the Premiership playoff final against Partick Thistle.
  • The Hoops have signed Polish centre-back Maik Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw in his homeland, central midfielder Odin Thiago Holm from Vålerenga in his native Norway alongside South Korean defensive midfielder Hyeok-kyu Kwon.
  • Tomoki Iwata has turned his temporary stay in Glasgow into a permanent one. Wingers Marco Tilio and Hyun-jun Yang have signed from Melbourne City and Gangwon FC respectively as Jota left Celtic for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad.
  • Malky Mackay's Staggies side head to Glasgow where, despite advancing in the League Cup after topping their group, they're looking to put a penalty shootout defeat against Kelty Hearts in Dingwall firmly behind them.
  • Centre-back Will Nightingale has joined County on loan from AFC Wimbledon. Left-back Josh Reid has rejoined the club from Coventry City, with fellow full-back James Brown leaving Blackburn Rovers for Dingwall and the Scottish Highlands.
  • Scott Allardice and Kyle Turner have signed from Championship clubs Inverness CT and Partick Thistle respectively. Midfielder Max Sheaf has joined from Redditch with both Jay Henderson and Eamonn Brophy swapping St Mirren for the Staggies.

Prediction

  • In the second league match of last season, Celtic left it late to sneak past Ross County in the Highlands with two goals in the final ten minutes sealing an eventual 3-1 win in August 2022.
  • August 2023 sees the reigning champions kick off the campaign under a returning new manager. With Ange Postecoglou heading down south to the Premier League, taking the reigns at Tottenham, the Australian's departure paved the way for Brendan Rodgers to return as Hoops boss. In front of the fans, on flag day, it's imperative that the former Leicester gaffer starts with a win.
  • For Ross County, their opening fixture is something of a free hit which could yield a surprisingly positive result. In front of the television cameras, a packed-out Parkhead and after the unveiling of the league flag, the Staggies start at the home of the treble winners with not many giving them a chance of picking up a point - let alone all three - in Glasgow's east end on Saturday lunchtime.
  • Ross County scored in three of their four matches against Celtic last season, but lost all four including in the League Cup. Like last season, the champions will want to start their defence of their Premiership crown with all three points here.
