Team News

Rangers
Celtic
  • Rangers manager Michael Beale may have a selection headache heading into the first Old Firm match of the season which, to the fans, is arguably much bigger than their midweek match against PSV Eindhoven in Champions League qualifying.
  • The back four, five including the goalkeeper, arguably pick themselves. The likes of Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell are probably certainties to start against Celtic on Sunday, perhaps being joined by Jose Cifuentes and Ryan Jack.
  • It's in offensive areas where selection issues maybe arise. Kemar Roofe started in the Highlands and scored against Ross County. Rabbi Matondo has also impressed in recent weeks, so could arguably also be pushing for a start at the weekend.
  • Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers made four changes to the Celts side that fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock which saw the Hoops eliminated from the Scottish League Cup, before being held at home by St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.
  • Alistair Johnston made his first appearance of the season, replacing Anthony Ralston in the starting eleven. Maik Nawrocki joins fellow defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh and Yuki Kobayashi on the treatment table.
  • Odin Holm dropped to the bench, as David Turnbull took his place in midfield. And in attack, Hyunjun Yang joined Japanese duo Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi to make his first Celtic start at Liel Abada's expense.

Prediction

  • The first Old Firm of the season takes place at Ibrox, with hosts Rangers trailing visitors Celtic by a point in the Scottish Premiership standings.
  • The Gers are fighting on both continental and domestic fronts heading into this match. However, make no mistake about it, the result and outcome in their midweek match against PSV will be put to the back of their minds given they've been presented with a great chance to beat their biggest rivals this weekend. The Gers will want a win and to ultimately lay a marker down early on here.
  • Celtic haven't scored in back-to-back matches, against Kilmarnock and St Johnstone, and are arguably up against it here. Despite their offensive difficulties in consecutive fixtures, there are numerous defensive absentees missing for the short trip to the other side of the city. Should you couple the last few games with a defeat in this one, pressure at Parkhead will begin to crank up.
  • Despite one victory in six attempts on derby day last season, Rangers have to take advantage of a somewhat depleted Celtic team in front of a capacity crowd made up entirely of their own fans.

  • Rangers wont lose against that lumberjack coach

  • Celtic have signed Liverpool central defender Nat Phillips on six-month loan.

  • @Marbella A good acquisition, no question. But does he need a game or two under his belt before facing Rangers?

  • Brendan Rodgers has lost only 1 of his previous 13 matches against Rangers.

  • @Marbella Make it 2 today. Celtic can’t find the net.
