Team News

St. Mirren
Celtic
  • Stephen Robinson named two changes to the St Mirren side that fell to a rare home loss at the hands of Kilmarnock as they lost 1-0 in Paisley on Wednesday, before a wonderful win at Pittodrie as they beat Aberdeen 3-0 to conclude 2023.
  • Richard Taylor remained alongside Alex Gogic and Marcus Fraser in the Buddies' backline. Thierry Small was previously filling in at right wing-back but James Bolton took his spot on the flank as Scott Tanser played at left wing-back.
  • Keanu Baccus continued to accompany club captain Mark O'Hara in midfield. Greg Kiltie pushed further forward to support a new strike pairing of Lewis Jamieson and Mikael Mandron. Jonah Ayunga came off the bench to score so could start in this one.
  • Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers named one change to the Celts side that clinched a 3-0 win against Dundee at Dens Park on Boxing Day, before they concluded 2023 with a 2-1 victory in the Glasgow derby against Rangers at Celtic Park.
  • Joe Hart continued in goal with Alastair Johnston, Liam Scales and Greg Taylor in front of him. Cameron Carter-Vickers started alongside Scales at centre-back but was forced off through injury so Stephen Welsh took his place.
  • Paulo Bernardo has scored two goals in as many matches in midfield alongside Callum McGregor and Matt O'Riley. Luis Palma and Daizen Maeda supported Kyogo Furuhashi who continued his excellent recent record against Rangers with the winning goal.

Prediction

  • Fifth plays first as St Mirren host league leaders Celtic in the final Scottish Premiership match in the first round of league fixtures in 2024.
  • The Buddies were winless in three league games, before picking up a vital three points against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Saints will hope to cement a spot in the top six but it's very competitive with teams having played matches more or games less. They must focus on themselves, hope for teams dropping points around them and wish that's enough for them to repeat last season's success.
  • League leaders Celtic picked up their second league victory over Rangers this season, which has seen the Scottish Premiership pendulum swing back in their favour despite the Gers having two games in hand on the Hoops. Similar to St Mirren, the reigning champions have to focus on themselves week-to-week - perhaps aided by no European football - as they look to come out on top.
  • Rangers may have applied early pressure if they beat Kilmarnock, but Celtic will hope to squeeze past Saints in response despite the Buddies' brilliant win at the weekend.
