Barton leaves Rangers

Rangers have announced they have parted company with Joey Barton after agreeing to terminate his contract.

Barton only joined the Scottish giants on a free transfer over the summer after turning down the chance to renew his contract with newly promoted Premier League side Burnley at the end of last season.

The 34-year-old was instrumental in Burnley’s promotion from the Championship but has reverted back to old habits at Rangers and hasn’t featured since their 5-1 defeat to fiercest rivals Celtic at the start of September.

Barton was suspended in the aftermath of that defeat after a row with team-mate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton before signing off with stress earlier this week.

However, the controversial midfielder has now been relieved of his duties at Rangers and is now a free agent. In the second half of last season’s Championship campaign, only two players completed more tackles than Barton (76).
