Bamford the star as Leeds dominate Premier League Team of the Week
The big winners from the weekend were Leeds United, who dismantled Aston Villa at Villa Park on Friday night. A Patrick Bamford-inspired performance saw the Whites come away from the Midlands with a 3-0 win and it's Marcelo Bielsa's side who dominate the Premier League team of the week. Representatives from Manchester City and Liverpool also make the cut after solid performances against West Ham and Sheffield United, respectively.
Illan Meslier (Leeds) - 7.54
The first of four Leeds players to make the Premier League team of the week, Illan Meslier kept his second clean sheet of the season as the Whites earned a 3-0 win at Aston Villa on Friday night. The youngster saved all three shots on target he faced at Villa Park, and won one aerial duel, to land a WhoScored rating of 7.54.
Stuart Dallas (Leeds) - 7.80
Another key man in Leeds' win at Villa, Stuart Dallas occupies the right-back spot having garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.80 in the Midlands. The defender won two aerial duels in the 3-0 victory, while three tackles and three interceptions saw Dallas play his part to help Leeds to a clean sheet.
Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton) - 7.52
Southampton ended Everton's unbeaten start to the season with a comprehensive 2-0 win on Sunday with Jannik Vestergaard pivotal in keeping the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Rodriguez quiet. The Dane won three aerial duels and made six clearances to help defend the Saints goal. Vestergaard also showcased his distribution qualities as he found a teammate with 95.3% of his 64 passes to make the team with a WhoScored rating of 7.52.
Luke Ayling (Leeds) - 7.48
The third Leeds player to make the team of the week partners Vestergaard at the back. Luke Ayling's sole clearance in the win at Villa Park was off the line in the first half with the scores level, which proved key on Friday night. In addition, the 29-year-old won four aerial duels to feature with a WhoScored rating of 7.48.
Joao Cancelo (Manchester City) - 7.64
Rounding off the backline is Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo. City may have dropped points at West Ham in Saturday's lunchtime kick off, but Cancelo was important for Pep Guardiola's side as they rescued a point in the capital. The full-back provided the assist for Phil Foden's equaliser shortly after the restart, that coming from one of two key passes, while three dribbles, three interceptions and two tackles saw the Portuguese full-back land a WhoScored rating of 7.64.
Andros Townsend (Crystal Palace) - 7.53
The first of two Crystal Palace players to feature in the Premier League team of the week following their 2-1 win at Fulham on Saturday, Andros Townsend put in a solid shift from the right flank for the Eagles. With Nathaniel Clyne making his first appearance since May 2019, Townsend protected his teammate impressively as he made nine tackles, a record in a Premier League match this season.
James Ward-Prowse (Southampton) - 8.34
The second Southampton player to feature, James Ward-Prowse bagged his first league goal of the season in Saints' 2-0 win over Everton, netting a fine opener at St. Mary's. The England international's goal came from his only shot on the day and he was unfortunate not to add an assist in the victory as he made three key passes. An additional three tackles saw Ward-Prowse land a WhoScored rating of 8.34.
Tom Cairney (Fulham) - 8.18
Fulham fell to their fifth league defeat of the season against Crystal Palace on Saturday, but Tom Cairney put in a commendable showing in the middle the park, noted in his fine WhoScored rating of 8.18. The midfielder bagged a late consolation, and he, like Ward-Prowse against Everton, was unlucky not to grab an assist as he made five key passes to make the team of the week.
Sadio Mane (Liverpool) - 7.46
The only Liverpool player to make the cut on the back of their 2-1 win over Sheffield United is Sadio Mane. The Senegal international provided the assist for Diogo Jota's second half strike, that proving to be the winning goal as the Reds moved level on points with rivals Everton at the top of the Premier League. That assist came from one of two key passes as Mane garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.46.
Patrick Bamford (Leeds) - 10.0
The final Leeds player in the Premier League team of the week is also the best rated from gameweek six. Patrick Bamford notched a hat-trick at Villa Park on Friday night, hitting the back of the net with three of nine shots. Two key passes and one successful dribble contributed towards Bamford's WhoScored rating of 10.0 as he lands the player of the week gong.
Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) - 9.26
Completing the Premier League team of the week is Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha. The Ivory Coast international had a direct hand in both of Palace's goals at Fulham on Saturday, providing the assist for Jairo Riedewald's opener early on before getting on the scoresheet midway through the second half. Those both came respective returns of four key passes and four shots as Zaha returned a WhoScored rating of 9.26 at Craven Cottage.
