2018 World Cup Team of the Tournament: Golden Glove winner Courtois shines

Belgium might look back on the 2018 World Cup as a missed opportunity but the Red Devils still achieved their best ever finish, beating England 2-0 on Saturday to secure third place.

There were a number of standout performers for Roberto Martinez’s side, including Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The 26-year-old endured a mixed campaign for Chelsea but excelled in Russia.

Courtois finished the 2018 World Cup as the highest WhoScored rated (5+ apps) goalkeeper (7.12) and was rightly awarded the Golden Glove award by FIFA.

No shot-stopper kept more clean sheets than Courtois (3), who is now widely expected to join Real Madrid this summer following some superb showings at the 2018 World Cup.

Courtois was not only difficult to beat between the sticks, making the joint-most saves (25), but he also commanded his penalty box with authority. In fact, no goalkeeper successfully claimed more crosses than Courtois at the 2018 World Cup (6).

The Belgium shot-stopper’s reputation dipped last season but now Courtois is back among the best goalkeepers in the world, with a big money move to Spain now on the cards.
