Dembele, Promes, Lo Celso: Top 10 deadline deals outside of England

With the transfer window now closed across Europe, the summer’s business is officially over and while their may not have been any Premier Leauge arrivals on Friday, there were plenty of big deals on the continent.

We take a look at the top ten signings not involving English clubs from deadline day based on valuations from transfermarkt.co.uk.

10) Moussa Dembele (Celtic to Lyon)

The news that Celtic fans were dreading was confirmed yesterday when Lyon secured a deal for star striker Dembele having sold Mariano back to Real Madrid. The Ligue 1 side needed a replacement and will hope the France U21 international can flourish back in his homeland having endured a frustrating season last time out, with his league goal tally dropping from 17 in 2016/17 to just eight.

9) Yann Karamoh (Inter to Bordeaux)

Another French outfit that needed to replace a departed star, Bordeaux agreed a loan deal for Inter prospect Karamoh in the hope that he can help fill the void left by Malcom. The 20-year-old featured 16 times in Serie A last season, scoring on one of just four starts and is held in high regard by the Nerazzurri.

8) Borja Mayoral (Real Madrid to Levante)

Another move influenced by Mariano’s return to Madrid, Los Blancos youngster Borja Mayoral has joined Levante on loan in search of regular playing time. The striker started three of 14 league appearances last season, scoring three goals, and will be hoping to make inroads on the Spanish national team before long.

7) Kevin Trapp (PSG to Frankfurt)

Having lost his place to Alphonse Areola last season Trapp promptly became third choice at PSG upon Gigi Buffon’s arrival and has in turn returned to Frankfurt having left the club for Paris back in 2015. The 28-year-old will hope to get his career back on track having started just four Ligue 1 games last season.

6) M’Baye Niang (Torino to Rennes)

To say that Niang is well travelled for a 23-year-old would be an understatement and he returns to where his senior career began with a move back to Ligue 1 from Torino. This time it is Rennes who will hope to get the best from the powerful forward, who has shown in glimpses with the likes of Caen, AC Milan, Genoa, Watford and during the World Cup with Senegal just what he can offer.

5) Hee-chan Hwang (Salzburg to HSV)

Joining a long line of Asian players to move to the Bundesliga, Hwang joins Hamburg on an initial loan deal from Salzburg. The 22-year-old scored twice as the Austrians reached the semi-finals of the Europa League last season and appeared in all three of South Korea’s matches at the World Cup.

4) Juan Bernat (Bayern to PSG)

Another player that will be keen to reinvigorate his career, it’s easy to forget that Bernat is still just 25 having signed for Bayern as a 20-year-old from Valencia. He’s played sporadically for the German champions since but found playing time hard to come by with David Alaba as his competition. The left-back joins PSG on loan hoping for more than the 11 league appearances he made last season.

3) Adem Ljajic (Torino to Besiktas)

Something of a shock transfer having enjoyed two very productive seasons with Torino, Serbia international Ljajic joins Besiktas on an initial loan deal. The 26-year-old playmaker has scored 16 goals and registered 18 assists in the last two Serie A seasons and could be a difference maker in the Turkish Super Lig.

2) Quincy Promes (Spartak to Sevilla)

It’s taken longer than expected for Promes to leave Spartak having been a star turn in the Russian Premier League for the past four seasons. Stretching back to his final campaign in his homeland with Twente, the 26-year-old has reached double figures for league goals in each of the past five seasons and will add further firepower to the Sevilla attack.

1) Giovani Lo Celso (PSG to Real Betis)

Another big move to Seville tops the list, however, with Real Betis this time sealing a real coup with the arrival of PSG midfielder Giovani Lo Celso on loan. The Argentine impressed for the French champions last season but was clearly seen as dispensable for the time being by new manager Tuchel, having had a hand in seven league goals last season whilst averaging a superb 3.9 tackles per 90 minutes from midfield.
