2018 World Cup Group G: England handed navigable draw

Before the draw was made, England would have taken a group containing Belgium, Panama and Tunisia, but it’s the former who they should be wary of in Group G…

Belgium

Brilliant Belgium were in flying form in qualifying, averaging 2.8 points per game to secure top spot in their group. The Red Devils have a raft of attacking talent at their disposal, including Romelu Lukaku, who was the top scoring Premier League player in European qualifying with 11 goals. However, Roberto Martinez’s tactical flaws have been called upon time and time again and while they deserve to be top seeds, this Golden Generation can be suspect at the back.

England

England conceded just three goals in qualifying, winning 26 of 30 points available as they sauntered to the World Cup finals. Yet, they have flattered to deceive on the grand stage in years gone by, winning only one of their last seven at a World Cup. There is talent in this Three Lions setup, yet they’re not tipped to go all the way next summer, though that at least takes pressure off the national team.

Tunisia

Tunisia are not to be underestimated in Group G having topped their qualifying group with four wins and two draws to their name. They aren’t the strongest side going forward, but shipped just four goals in qualifying to secure their spot in Russia. A lack of experienced personnel in European leagues could hinder their chances of upsetting the odds, however.

Panama

Panama’s 2-1 win over Costa Rica secured them a place at their first ever World Cup. The result saw the president confirm that the following day would be a public holiday to allow supporters to celebrate and they will have breathed a sigh of relief when the draw was made. They’re unlikely to progress from Group G, but you can be sure they’ll make a good stab of it next year.
