Newcastle duo soar in latest Premier League player form rankings

The midweek round of Premier League matches conjured up few surprises in terms of results but there have been some quietly impressive performances in recent weeks, most notably at relegation battlers Newcastle. The Magpies have only lost one of their last six in the league and have won four times in that spell, with two players featuring in our latest top-10 player form rankings.

Here we run through the top-10 and provide additional information about their Football INDEX share prices.

10. Jan Bednarek (Southampton) - 7.53 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.86

Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek has been hugely impressive since the turn of the year and has won three WhoScored Man of the Match awards in his last seven outings, though one does not impact his weighted rating here. In his last six league appearances, his WhoScored rating has only dipped below 7.00 once and he has even provided an assist in a 1-1 draw with Burnley.

9. Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) - 7.54 rating
Football INDEX share price - £3.25

Wilfried Zaha has fallen four places in our form rankings after struggling to impact Wednesday’s 3-1 home defeat to former club Manchester United. The Crystal Palace winger has, nevertheless, played a direct hand in five goals in his last six league appearances, which includes scoring in three straight league games for the first time in his career.

8. Paul Pogba (Manchester United) - 7.62 rating
Football INDEX share price - £21.63

Paul Pogba has also dropped in our form rankings but that is only due to the fact he has set the bar so high under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The 2018 World Cup winner registered his ninth assist of the Premier League campaign in midweek but it wasn’t enough to prevent a decline in WhoScored rating over his last six appearances. In that time, he has been directly involved in six goals.

7. Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal) - 7.64 rating
Football INDEX share price - £3.02

Alexandre Lacazette has increased one spot despite starting Wednesday’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth on the bench. The French striker still managed to score in his 26-minute cameo and has now scored four straight Premier League home matches, becoming the first Arsenal player since Robin Van Persie to do so.

6. Sadio Mane (Liverpool) - 7.65 rating
Football INDEX share price - £5.18

Liverpool needed a reaction in midweek and Jurgen Klopp certainly got one, as the Premier League leaders thumped Watford 5-0. Sadio Mane helped himself to two goals in the rout, including an audacious backheel, to help him jump 15 places in our form rankings. The Liverpool No.10 has now scored six goals in his last six league appearances, only failing to score in a 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

5. Fabian Schar (Newcastle) - 7.77 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.90

Fabian Schar is arguably one of the most underrated players in the Premier League this season. The 27-year-old has been immense for Newcastle and it seems bizarre he has only started 14 league games. Schar announced himself to the league properly in midweek after scoring a rocket from long range in a 2-0 win over Burnley. He has scored three league goals this season and they have all come in his last six appearances. His effort from outside the box was the first Newcastle have scored in the league this season.

4. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - 7.78 rating
Football INDEX share price - £4.65

Not only is Virgil van Dijk regarded as one of the best defenders in the league, on Wednesday night he showed he is dangerous in the opponents penalty box too. The Liverpool centre-back scored two late goals against Watford on Wednesday night, more than he managed in his previous 41 league appearances for the club. Van Dijk has also helped Liverpool keep clean sheets in each of their last three league outings.

3. Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) - 7.81 rating
Football INDEX share price - £8.27

Raheem Sterling was top of the player form rankings last week but has dropped two places after making a 36-minute substitute appearance against West Ham on Wednesday. The England international has still, however, played a direct hand in five goals in his last six league appearances.

2. Isaac Hayden (Newcastle) - 7.89 rating
Football INDEX share price - £1.07

Newcastle were contemplating selling Isaac Hayden in January and they will be relieved they didn’t The 23-year-old has been integral to their resurgence in the last month, playing a direct hand in four goals in Newcastle’s last six matches.

1. Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) - 7.93 rating
Football INDEX share price - £4.88

Sergio Aguero was running on empty before he was eventually subbed off in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over West Ham but the Argentina international still had enough left in the tank to score the match winner. Aguero is now the outright leading scorer in the Premier League this season (18) and eight of those goals have come in his last six matches.
