Brits Abroad: Kane breaks Bundesliga record as Spence impresses against Juventus
Harry Kane broke a Bundesliga record with his goal at the weekend as both he and Eric Dier shone in Bayern Munich's 5-2 win at Darmstadt. Fikayo Tomori has consolidated his first team spot for AC Milan upon his return to fitness and, along with compatriot Ruben Loftus-Cheek, was solid as the Italian side beat Verona 3-1 on Sunday.
Djed Spence, Chuba Akpom and Angel Gomes also excelled for their respective sides over the weekend as Brits Abroad takes a look at the performances of those on the continent and beyond.
Fikayo Tomori didn't really put a foot wrong in AC Milan's 3-1 win at Verona on Sunday. Tomori started for the second league game running following his return from injury and he was solid in possession as he found a teammate with 96.9% of his 64 attempted passes. The England international also made three clearances to help land a WhoScored rating of 6.44.
Remaining at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek was a thorn in the side of the Verona backline as he completed three dribbles and made one tackle in AC Milan's 3-1 win. An additional key pass saw the 28-year-old land a WhoScored rating of 6.96.
Genoa bounced back from back-to-back defeats with a creditable 0-0 draw at Juventus in Sunday's early kick off. Djed Spence put in his best rated Serie A showing in the stalemate as he earned a WhoScored rating of 7.16. The 23-year-old defended well as he made three tackles, two interceptions and two clearances, while he also created one chance in a resolute display.
A late Giovanni Fabbian strike saw Bologna maintain their top-four push as they beat Empoli 1-0 on Friday night. Lewis Ferguson was impressive in possession prior to his 79th minute withdrawal as he found a teammate with 90.8% of his 65 attempted passes as the Scot returned a WhoScored rating of 6.66.
Harry Kane set the record for most goals in a debut Bundesliga campaign in Bayern Munich's 5-2 win at Darmstadt at the weekend as the England captain netted his 31st league goal of the season. The striker also registered an assist in the victory from respective returns of four shots and one key pass. However, Kane was forced off late on with an ankle injury, which will be assessed ahead of England's meetings with Brazil and Belgium.
Eric Dier also impressed in the victory at Darmstadt as he earned a WhoScored rating of 7.25. The 30-year-old found a teammate with 93.8% of his 97 passes in the 5-2 win, and made eight accurate long balls. Six aerial wins and one last-man tackle capped a solid afternoon for Dier.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens - Borussia Dortmund
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens came on midway through the second half of Borussia Dortmund's eventual 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt and returned a 100% pass success rate and created one goalscoring chance in the home triumph.
Kieran Tierney - Real Sociedad
Kieran Tierney replaced Javi Galan at the break in Real Sociedad's 2-0 win over Cadiz and he got forward well where possible, completing one dribble. Tierney also made two tackles to help La Real to a clean sheet and Tierney to a WhoScored rating of 6.51.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles put in a sub-par showing in Lyon's 3-2 win over Toulouse. Operating in an unfamiliar left wing role, the 26-year-old may have made two key passes but returned a WhoScored rating of just 6.17 in a poor performance.
Angel Gomes registered his sixth league assist of the season in Lille's 1-1 draw with Brest at the weekend, providing for Jonathan David midway through the second half with one of two key passes. The 23-year-old also managed a pass success rate of 94% from 50 passes to land a WhoScored rating of 7.13.
Over to the Eredivisie now, Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw by Sparta Rotterdam with Jordan Henderson playing in a three-man backline in the stalemate. Henderson played the assist for Chuba Akpom's second half strike shortly before his withdrawl from one of two key passes, while he also made two clearances in the game at the Sparta-Stadion Het Kasteel.
Chuba Akpom proved to be Ajax's saviour at Sparta Rotterdam as he came off the bench to directly contribute to both Ajax goals in the 2-2 draw. Akpom halved the deficit midway through the second half with his only shot and then turned provider for Steven Bergwijn late on with his only key pass.
Rizespor came from behind to beat Gaziantep FK 3-1 over the weekend, though it was a game that Jonjo Shelvey will want to quickly forget. Shelvey missed a second half penalty, though he was unfortunate not to add an assist having made three key passes.
Ryan Gauld - Vancouver Whitecaps
Vancouver Whitecaps claimed a fine 3-1 win at FC Dallas over the weekend and while Ryan Gauld failed to contribute to a goal, the Scottish winger put in a solid shift off the ball for his side. Indeed, Gauld made four tackles and won three aerial duels to return a WhoScored rating of 6.98.
Matty Longstaff was unable to build upon a solid debut when Toronto FC took on NYCFC at the weekend, eventually crashing to a 2-1 loss in the Big Apple. Longstaff managed one shot, one key pass, one dribble and one tackle before being replaced at the break.
