Champions League Team of the Week: Chelsea loanee excels in shock outing

Here we run through the best WhoScored rated XI from the midweek Champions League action, as Europe's elite competition returns.

Goalkeeper: Peter Gulacsi (RB Leipzig) - 8.04 rating

RB Leipzig were well worth their 1-0 victory away to Tottenham on Wednesday night but still required former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to be on red alert to snuff out any threat to his goal. The 29-year-old earned his clean sheet with five saves and claimed the WhoScored Man of the Match award.

Right-back: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.27 rating

It's advantage Borussia Dortmund following their 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain and Achraf Hakimi was a constant menace down their right hand side. Hakimi's powerful runs constantly pegged PSG back and helped Dortmund stay in control of the game. The 21-year-old managed three shots, registered two key passes and completed seven tackles and interceptions combined.

Centre-back: Davinson Sanchez (Tottenham) - 7.46 rating

It was a bitterly disappointing night for Tottenham against RB Leipzig and you can count on one hand how many players performed relatively well. Davinson Sanchez was one of those. The Colombia international managed six clearances, one more than his previous four appearances in the competition this season combined. He also completed four tackles and interceptions combined and two dribbles, having only managed one prior to that in the competition this season.

Centre-back: Ethan Ampadu (RB Leipzig) - 7.33 rating

With RB Leipzig unable to call on their three first-choice centre-backs against Tottenham, Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu was drafted into the team for just his second start all season. The 19-year-old certainly enjoyed his return to the capital, impressively completing 94.9% of his attempted passes. Ampadu also made five interceptions, the joint most by any player involved in the first four last-16 ties.

Left-back: Renan Lodi (Atletico Madrid) - 7.87 rating

Renan Lodi had some nervy touches during Atletico Madrid's 1-0 win over Liverpool but played his part in the Spanish side's defensive masterstroke to shut out Jurgen Klopp's side. Atletico limited Liverpool to no shots on target in a defensive display typical of Diego Simeone's side. Lodi weighed in with eight tackles and interceptions combined.

Right midfield: Hans Hateboer (Atalanta) - 8.54 rating

Atalanta ensured Wednesday night was one to remember as they celebrated a 4-1 victory over Valencia in their first ever Champions League knockout game. Hateboer netted his first ever goal in the competition and helped himself to another in a dominant display by the Serie A outfit. He scored from both of his attempts, while also winning three aerial duels.

Central midfield: Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid) - 8.39 rating

For someone that doesn't find the back of the net often, Saul Niguez has a remarkably knack of scoring important goals. The Atletico Madrid midfielder scored the winner against Liverpool, his 10th strike in his Champions League career. Remarkably, ever single one of his goals in the competition has been the opening goal of the game. The 25-year-old also made four tackles and interceptions combined and three clearances to help Atletico over the line.

Central midfield: Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain) - 8.10 rating

Paris Saint-Germain endured another night to forget in the Champions League knockout phase and Neymar was particularly disappointing, clearly not up to speed after missing the club's last four matches. Neymar afterwards hit out at the club for wrapping him in cotton-wool in the build up to the match rather than letting him get his match sharpness back. Neymar, however, has given PSG a glimer of hope in the return leg after netting a crucial away goal. He also hit the woodwork, registered three key passes and completed as many dribbles.

Left midfield: Layvin Kurzawa (Paris Saint-Germain) - 7.48 rating

Achraf Hakimi gave Layvin Kurzawa a tough night down Paris Saint-Germain's left flank but the 27-year-old was often at the heart of the French sides most dangerous breakaways. Kurzawa completed six dribbles against Borussia Dortmund, a personal record in any league or European match this season - he had not even managed more than two prior to Tuesday night. The PSG left-back also managed five tackles and interceptions combined.

Striker: Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.61 rating

Erling Haaland's remarkable season continued in his first ever Champions League knockout tie with a double in Borussia Dortmund's first-leg win over Paris Saint-Germain. Haaland showed striker's instinct for the first and sheer power for the second, drilling in a long-range effort just minutes after PSG drew level. The 19-year-old now has 10 goals in seven Champions League appearances, the quickest player in the competition's history to reach that landmark.

Striker: Josip Ilicic (Atalanta) - 8.98 rating

You don't just have to be an emerging superstar to enjoy a breathtaking campaign, with 32-year-old Josip Ilicic enjoying the best season of his career. Ilicic netted a stunning long range effort in Atalanta's dismantling of Valencia on Wednesday night, his first ever goal in UEFA's elite competition. Ilicic completed 94% of his attempted passes against Valencia, completed five dribbles and registered three key passes. He has now won the WhoScored Man of the Match award in four of his last five outings.
