Wigan vs Newcastle - Match Preview
This meeting sees two of the Premier League’s form sides lock horns with both having much to play for.
Hosts Wigan are desperately fighting against relegation and despite looking doomed only a few weeks ago, four wins from five – including memorable victories over Manchester United and Arsenal – have dragged them out of the drop zone but not yet to guaranteed safety.
The Magpies meanwhile continue with their unthought-of ambition of Champions League football and will see this as a must-win game with tough fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea still to come.
Tempting are the unders, given that the Latics have seen their last seven Premier League games at the DW Stadium go under 2.5 goals while the Toon have not conceded in four. The price of 1.85 seems reasonable but is not our bet for this one.
Nine goals in six games means that Papiss Cissé is the most in-form striker in the league and with five of his eleven Newcastle goals being the first in the game, 5.50 seems a good price for him to break the deadlock. For safety, go each-way, meaning that even if he doesn’t get the opener, the bet will pay 1/3 odds if he scores anytime.
Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona - Match Preview
Rayo look set to survive their first season back in the big time and that is down to their courageous, swashbuckling approach.
Their games average the third most goals in the league, only behind the predictable big two. Their all-or-nothing attacking approach is proven by their home record this season (W7 D1 L9) – and also by the amount of goals they’ve scored, the most in the bottom half and more than fifth place Osasuna, who have even played a game more.
Barca’s away record is impressive of course, but following two dramatic defeats in a week, it will be very difficult for Guardiola to pick up his Culés. There is obviously the fear of a backlash though, and that’s why we will be steering clear of any result betting here.
Instead we will be backing Rayo to stick to their attacking guns and seize a Barca at their lowest ebb for quite some time, in the total team goals market Rayo over 1.5 is 3.50 and worth backing.
Borussia Moenchengladbach vs Augsburg - Match Preview
The Foals host Augsburg knowing that they must hope for help from elsewhere if they are to grab third place and therefore bypass the Champions League qualifying rounds. Their remarkable season has been built on a solid defence and visitors Augsburg should be of little concern to them.
The Swabians have won just two games on the road this season and have struggled for goals away from home. Up against a defence that’s as good as the runaway top two, they have little chance.
With Marco Reus playing one of his last games for the club, he will be gagging to add to his already impressive goal tally of 16 and is 4.75 to score first.
That isn’t the bet of choice though, instead we will be punting on Gladbach to win to nil, at a very healthily priced 3.00.
Brave bet on Rayo. Barcelona only concede 0.7 goals a game and Rayo only score 1.7. goals on average.
