Arsenal and Liverpool represented among top performing Premier League players

Here we round up the top five WhoScored rated players from the midweek Premier League matches.

5. Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Arsenal) - 8.59 rating / Fabian Schar (Newcastle) - 8.59 rating

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has now played a direct hand in five goals in his last two Premier League matches after scoring once and providing two assists in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory at home to Bournemouth on Wednesday night. The Armenia international registered four key passes in total.

Fabian Schar was unsurprisingly the WhoScored Man of the Match from Newcastle’s victory at home to Burnley after his stunning long range goal. Schar’s effort is the only goal Newcastle have scored from outside the box in the Premier League this season and it was certainly worth the wait. Schar also had another attempt on goal, won four aerial duels and made seven clearances to help Newcastle keep a clean sheet on Tuesday.

4. Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton) - 8.70 rating

Gylfi Sigurdsson helped inspire Everton to just their third Premier League win of 2019 on Tuesday by netting two goals in a 3-0 triumph over strugglers Cardiff. The 29-year-old scored from both attempts on goal; registered one key pass, completed two dribbles and won two fouls. Sigurdsson now has 11 league goals for the season, his joint-most in a single Premier League campaign.

3. Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) - 9.23 rating

There hasn’t been much good to say about Mesut Ozil this season but the German playmaker offered a reminder of his qualities in Arsenal’s drubbing of Bournemouth. Ozil opened the scoring in the fourth minute and then supplied the past for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double their advantage later in the first half. Ozil was also denied by the woodwork. The 30-year-old registered four key passes in total and impressively completed 96.9% of his passes.

2. Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) - 9.37 rating

Trent Alexander-Arnold trebled his tally for assists in the Premier League by setting up three goals in Liverpools 5-0 win over Watford on Wednesday night. The England international is one of just four players to manage the feat in a single game in one of Europe’s top five leagues this season. Alexander-Arnold registered five key passes in total, while also winning two tackles.

1. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - 9.54 rating

Virgil van Dijk stole the WhoScored Man of the Match award from team-mate Alexander-Arnold in their 5-0 win over Watford after scoring two goals in the final 11 minutes. The 27-year-old scored as many goals against Watford as his previous 41 Premier League appearances for Liverpool combined. Van Dijk won five aerial duels and made nine clearances to help Liverpool keep another clean sheet.
