Revealed: Griezmann among French heavyweights missing from ultimate France-Germany XI

France's meeting with Germany tonight is the game of the round in the first group games at Euro 2020. The previous two most recent World Cup winners clash in Group F, without doubt the group of death at the competition. Alongside Hungary and Portugal in their group, the duo will be keen to avoid an opening round defeat, even if four of the six best placed third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stages.

France came into Euro 2020 as pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy next month and complete a World Cup-Euros double for the second time in their history. Germany, meanwhile, are looking to send Jogi Loew off with a winners' medal as the 61-year-old calls time on his career as Die Mannschaft boss at the end of Euro 2020.

Tonight's mouth watering meeting between has also prompted a combined XI between these two European heavyweights. In this instance we look at a side compiled of the best rated available players in each squad from their 2020/21 league ratings. In this instance, injured or suspended players are excluded, so Leon Goretzka, who has returned following injury, but misses tonight's game against France, doesn't make the cut.

Given the calibre of personnel running through the respective teams, there are a host of players missing from this side as we run through the XI on the latest episode of Edge of the Box. It was always going to spark debate, particularly given the absence of the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Manuel Neuer of France and Germany, respectively.

Yet, with a pool of 52 players and only 11 spots up for grabs, this XI was never going to appeal to everyone, yet it is one that would have the quality to go all the way at Euro 2020, wouldn't you agree?
