Given Gary O’Neil was appointed as head coach just four days before the beginning of last season, Wolves did well to enjoy a fairly steady campaign, finishing 14th while claiming impressive victories over the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham. The former Bournemouth boss took Wolves to within touching distance of Wembley, reaching the quarter-finals for the FA Cup only to be knocked out by Coventry City.
Key Player - Joao Gomes
In his second season at the club, Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes earned the plaudits of supporters and the admiration of the Premier League’s top clubs with his performances. Gomes is a battling defensive midfielder, whose qualities in the middle of the park enables midfield partner Mario Lemina to advance up the pitch and have an impact in the final third. The 23-year-old’s impressive form over the course of last season was rewarded with a first senior Brazil appearance in March.
Signing to Watch - Rodrigo Gomes
Wolves have seen more players depart than arrive in the summer transfer window so far, but one player supporters will be excited about is Portuguese winger Rodrigo Gomes, who made the move from Braga in June for a reported £12.7 million. Having struggled for game time at Braga, the 21-year-old spent last season out on loan with Liga Portugal side Estoril, where he managed seven goals and seven assists in 26 league starts. Gomes may not be a readymade replacement for the departed Pedro Neto just yet, but he certainly promises to be a player of a similar calibre in the future.
