Champions Spain dominate Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament

 

After Spain’s triumph over England in Sunday evening’s final, we’ve taken a look back at the best performers from Euro 2024 in our Team of the Tournament.

 

To be considered for selection, players must have made at least four appearances. 

 

Giorgi Mamardashvili (Georgia) - 7.76 

 

After an exceptional campaign with tournament new boys Georgia, Giorgi Mamardashvili takes his place between the sticks in our XI. The 23-year-old’s remarkable performance against Czechia was the tournament’s second best, with a WhoScored rating of 9.25. 

 

Joshua Kimmich (Germany) - 7.45 

 

Germany’s Joshua Kimmich lines up at right-back following five solid performances for the hosts at Euro 2024, in which he registered two assists and managed an impressive 15 key passes. The 29-year-old also made seven tackles and six interceptions before his side exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage. 

 

Jaka Bijol (Slovenia) - 7.33 

 

Slovenia’s Jaka Bijol earns a place in our Team of the Tournament after four very strong showings, against England, Portugal, Denmark and Serbia. The 25-year-old Udinese defender helped Slovenia to impressive clean sheets against England and Portugal, while he individually he managed 11 tackles, six interceptions and a whopping 38 clearances. 

 

Pepe (Portugal) - 7.33 

 

With an identical WhoScored rating (7.33), Portugal’s Pepe joins Bijol at the heart of our defence. The 41-year-old showed no signs of his age with four hugely impressive performances for Roberto Martinez’s side, three of which resulted in clean sheets. 

 

 

Nuno Mendes (Portugal) - 7.51 

 

Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes completes our back four, having played a part in those aforementioned clean sheets, as the Selecao reached the quarter-finals. The PSG defender also managed 12 tackles, five interceptions, nine clearances and seven successful dribbles. 

 

Lamine Yamal (Spain) - 7.61 

 

The name on everybody’s lips following Euro 2024 is Spain’s superstar 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who starred throughout La Roja’s winning campaign. The Barcelona attacker provided more assists (4) than any other player at the tournament, while also finding the net with a wonderfully curled effort in the semi-final victory over France. 

 

Fabian Ruiz (Spain) - 7.56 

 

The second Spain representative in our XI is midfielder Fabian Ruiz, whose fine displays throughout the competition will have certainly had him in the conversation for the tournament’s standout player. Ruiz both scored and assisted in the victories over Croatia and Georgia, while he also managed a total of 17 shots on goal, 10 key passes and 12 successful dribbles.

Dani Olmo (Spain) - 7.72 

 

Ruiz is joined in midfield by Spain teammate Dani Olmo, whose impact on the tournament was far greater than expected for a player who made just three starts. The RB Leipzig attacker scored in the knockout stage wins over Georgia, Germany and France, while he also provided two assists; no player registered more goal involvements than the 26-year-old (5). 

 

Jamal Musiala (Germany) - 7.51 

 

Like Olmo, Germany’s Jamal Musiala is a joint-winner of Euro 2024’s Golden Boot, having scored three goals over the course of the tournament. The 21-year-old was the hosts’ bright spark for much of their campaign, scoring in the wins over Scotland and Hungary in the group stage, as well as the 2-0 victory over Denmark in the round of 16. 

 

Nico Williams (Spain) - 7.39 

 

Like opposite winger Yamal, Spain’s Nico Williams shone at Euro 2024, dazzling defences with his tricky and ferocious wing-play. The 22-year-old scored and assisted in the round of 16 win over Georgia, before netting the most important goal of his career to date, to put Spain ahead in Sunday’s final against England.  

 

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands) - 7.59 

 

Rounding off our XI is Netherlands attacker Cody Gakpo, another recipient of Euro 2024’s shared Golden Boot award, following his three goals for the Oranje in Germany. The Liverpool attacker scored against Poland and Austria in the group stage, before netting - and providing an assist - in the last 16 victory over Romania. In all, Gakpo managed a total of 13 shots on goal, 12 key passes and nine successful dribbles.
