Doku leads Premier League Team of the Week dominated by Man City
Manchester City lead the way in the Premier League team of the week after their 3-1 victory at West Ham on Saturday. Players from Bournemouth, Newcastle, Fulham, Liverpool and Aston Villa also make the cut.
Bournemouth fought well to secure a clean sheet and a point at home to Chelsea on Sunday, and the Cherries’ keeper’s contribution was crucial. The Brazilian made a total of six saves to help land himself a WhoScored rating of 8.29, earning him the Player of the Match award and a spot in the team of the week.
Kieran Trippier (Newcastle) - 7.46
Newcastle returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 home victory over Brentford and England international Kieran Trippier was the standout performer at St James’ Park. The full-back contributed defensively with one tackle and one interception, as well as offensively with two key passes and one successful dribble, to return a WhoScored rating of 7.46.
Fulham sealed their second win of the season at home to Luton on Saturday, and USA international Tim Ream’s three tackles and three clearances helped them over the line for their second clean sheet of the campaign. The 35-year-old also made a total of 140 accurate passes - only his centre-back partner Issa Diop made more (156) - while maintaining a pass success rate of 94.6%.
Fabian Schär (Newcastle) - 7.30
Centre-back Fabian Schar is Newcastle’s second inclusion in this week’s team, his one tackle, one interception, four clearances and two blocks were pivotal in helping Eddie Howe’s side to a first clean sheet of the season. The Switzerland international also completed three accurate long balls against the Bees - no outfield player completed more for either side.
Andy Robertson (Liverpool) - 7.88
Liverpool made it four wins in a row when they came from behind to claim all three points at Molineux on Saturday, and it was left-back Andy Robertson who put the visitors ahead in the 85th minute. The Scotsman’s first Liverpool goal since May 2022, along with two tackles, two interceptions and two key passes helped him to earn a WhoScored rating of 7.88.
Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) - 8.12
Bernardo Silva’s best performance of the season so far came at the London Stadium on Saturday, as Manchester City fought back from a goal down to run out 3-1 winners and continue their perfect start to the season. The 29-year-old had a direct hand in two of City’s three second-half goals, scoring in the 76th minute before turning provider for Erling Haaland 10 minutes later. The Portugal international also made two key passes and maintained a pass success rate of 94.6%, to land a WhoScored rating of 8.12.
Rodri (Manchester City) - 8.09
Pep Guardiola’s midfield maestro Rodri turned in yet another high class performance against West Ham, making a tackle, an interception and four key passes to help his side to a fifth win in a row and himself to a WhoScored rating of 8.09.
Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa) - 7.94
Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz earned himself the Player of the Match award and a spot in the team of the week with his display against Crystal Palace on Saturday. The Brazilian made a total of six tackles - no player on the pitch made more - as well as one key pass and one successful dribble, before converting a decisive penalty in the 97th minute to help the home side to all three points.
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 8.33
Despite failing to find the goal himself, Mohamed Salah’s performance against Wolves on Saturday was his highest rated of the season so far. The Egyptian provided the assist for both Cody Gakpo’s equaliser and Andy Robertson’s late winner, as well as a match-high five key passes, to land a WhoScored rating of 8.33.
Julián Álvarez (Manchester City) - 7.95
Manchester City attacker Julian Alvarez played a vital part in Saturday’s win at West Ham; the Argentine set up both Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva for second-half goals that ultimately secured all three points, earning himself a WhoScored rating of 7.95 in the process.
