PSG pair lead the way as Europe's most prolific assist-to-goalscorer combination

A solid attacking combination is key for any side in their pursuit of glory. The notable offensive pair in the Premier League is Cesar Azpilicueta and Alvaro Morata. Indeed, all six of Azpilicueta’s top-flight assists this season have come for a Morata goal.

The pair reached the milestone on Boxing Day, but the goals have since dried up for Morata, who hasn’t netted since the 2-0 win over Brighton over the fesitive period. For a while, that was the most prolific assist to goalscorer combination in Europe’s top five leagues.

They’ve since been caught and leapfrogged as the most prolific route to goal. Of the eight Serie A assists former Southampton man Gaston Ramirez as registered this term, six have been for a Fabio Quagliarella goal, with the experienced forward rolling back the years to net 17 league goals this term in this European hunting Sampdoria outfit.

Neymar and Edinson Cavani trump the pairs, however. Seven of Neymar’s 13 Ligue 1 assists this term have been for a Cavani goal, that in turn the most prolific assist-to-goalscorer combination in Europe’s top five leagues this term. So much for any hostility between the two! That being said, there is a chance for the duo to be caught, with Neymar recently sustaining an ankle injury that requires surgery, which has ruled him out of action until May.

In both the Premier League and Serie A, too, the most prolific assist-to-goalscorer combinations are both at risk of being matched. Kevin De Bruyne has assisted five of Sergio Aguero’s Premier League goals this term, while Ivan Perisic has provided five goals for Mauro Icardi in Italy's top tier.

In the Bundesliga, Thomas Muller to Robert Lewandowski is the most prolific assist-to-goalscorer combination, that returning five goals, though Joshua Kimmich to Lewandowski and Philipp Max to Caiuby (both 4 goals) are on the coattails of the aforementioned duo.

Meanwhile in the Premier League, no fewer than seven assist-to-goalscorer combinations sit on four goals, including Riyad Mahrez to Jamie Vardy, Dele Alli to Harry Kane and Sadio Mane to Mohamed Salah. In Spain, the lead duos all ply their trade for Barcelona, with the Lionel Messi to Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba to Lionel Messi and Sergi Roberto to Luis Suarez assist-to-goalscorer combinations all yielding five goals in La Liga.

Considering the readiness with which Barcelona find the back of the net, you’d expect any of three pairs to catch Neymar to Cavani sooner rather than later.
