Brits Abroad: Gomes adds eighth assist as Scottish marksman shines in MLS
Brits Abroad returns to round off the British players shining away from the Premier League over the weekend, with stars from AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Lille and Roma all in action.
AC Milan ended a four-game winless run in style as they smashed Cagliari 5-1. Fikayo Tomori came on at the break and was solid having found a teammate 96.9% of his 32 attempted passes, and made three clearances and two tackles.
Like Tomori, Djed Spence also came on at the break over the weekend as Genoa claimed a 2-1 win over Sassuolo. Spence was solid off the ball, making three clearances and two tackles, while he also won two aerial duels to help return a WhoScored rating of 6.97.
After last week's impressive win over Inter, Sassuolo reverted to type as they lost 2-1 at Genoa. Josh Doig may have made four clearances and two tackles, but the Scot also committed two fouls, received one booking and was dispossessed once in the defeat.
Tammy Abraham came off the bench for the second half of Roma's 2-1 loss at Atalanta, earning a WhoScored rating of 6.94 in the process. Abraham failed to fire off a shot but he won two aerial duels and made one key pass, one successful dribble and one tackle.
Jadon Sancho - Borussia Dortmund
In their penultimate game of the season, Borussia Dortmund lost 3-0 at Mainz with Jadon Sancho struggling off the bench. Sancho failed to complete any of his four attempted dribbles and was dispossessed once in a disappointing cameo.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens - Borussia Dortmund
Remaining at the MEWA ARENA, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was replaced in the 76th minute but endured a quiet showing in all honesty. The teen winger may have completed four dribbles but was also dispossessed twice to return a WhoScored rating of just 6.32.
Lille boosted their chances of finishing third with a 2-1 win at Lille over the weekend, a game in which Angel Gomes provided his eighth assist of the season, and his sixth for Jonathan David. That assist came from one of two key passes, while Gomes also found a teammate with 91.2% of his 57 attempted passes.
Jordan Henderson was unfortunate not to register an assist in Ajax's 3-0 win over Almere City having made two key passes. Off the ball, though, Henderson struggled as he was dribbled past four times.
Chuba Akpom marked his seventh league start of the campaign with his third assist, that coming from one of two key passes. Akpom also completed two dribbles and made two tackles as he returned a WhoScored rating of 7.59.
Jonjo Shelvey registered a direct goal involvement for the fourth game running as he scored his third league goal of the season in Rizespor's 2-1 loss at Pendikspor. That goal came from five shots as the 32-year-old returned a WhoScored rating of 6.74.
Matty Longstaff directly contributed to a second goal in as many outings as he registered his second assist of the 2024 MLS season in the eventual 3-2 loss to NYCFC. That assist came from one of two key passes in what proved to be Longstaff's best rated showing of the season so far.
Lewis Morgan earned a WhoScored rating of 9.57 as NYRB defeated the New England Revs 4-2 in the Big Apple. Morgan scored with one of four shots and provided one assist from three key passes. An additional three successful dribbles marked his second best rated display of the 2024 MLS season.
Ryan Gauld - Vancouver Whitecaps
Vancouver Whitecaps fell to a 3-0 loss at LAFC over the weekend but Ryan Gauld did all he could to aid his side at the BMO Stadium. Indeed, Gauld managed two shots, two key passes and two tackles in the defeat.
Back in the side against LA Galaxy, Matt Crooks struggled to assert himself in Real Salt Lake's eventual 2-2 draw. While he managed two key passes, Crooks was also dispossessed twice, committed three fouls and was dribbled past three times before his 72nd minute withdrawal.
