Laporte in but no Mahrez: Manchester City's transfer window assessed

Martin Laurence: While Aymeric Laporte could prove a very decent addition he may take time to adapt physically, with that the reason why the youngster is as yet uncapped for France. He’s a Guardiola-style defender though in most respects, so should be a success. The loss of Leroy Sane through injury is a big blow and does leave City a little short in terms of natural width but missing out on Mahrez, despite their panicked attempts, shouldn’t be a problem. Time for the youngsters to shine.

Josh Wright: Pep Guardiola's side have already wrapped up the league title and strengthened their chances of winning an unprecendeted treble by signing Aymeric Laporte. Guardiola now has a fourth centre-back that he trusts and that should stand them in good stead going forward. Whichever way you want to dress it up, City missed out on long-term transfer target Alexis Sanchez to rivals United and that is certainly a blow. A set-back in Gabriel Jesus' recovery and long-term injury to Leroy Sane has only emphasised that since.

Overall grade: C+

Ben McAleer: A failure to land Riyad Mahrez, coupled with Leroy Sane's injury, leaves City short on wide options ahead of a key period of the season. The signing of Aymeric Laporte bolsters the defence and allowed Eliaquim Mangala to leave, which can only be a positive. Elsewhere the signing of Jack Harrison and subsequent loan to Middlesbrough rings similar to that of Aaron Mooy's Huddersfield move, which City could profit from.
