Roma vs Man Utd - Europa League team news and prediction

Manchester United travel to Rome for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday bidding to get past this hurdle in cup competitions at the fifth attempt under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils hold a huge advantage from the first leg at Old Trafford but Solskjaer has warned his players the tie is far from done and reminded them Roma recently overturned an even bigger margin to dump Barcelona out of the Champions League.

Roma, meanwhile, are seemingly already planning for next season after announcing Paulo Fonseca's departure at the end of the season, with former United boss Jose Mourinho to take over. Mourinho hasn't managed in Italy since leading Inter to a European treble in 2010.

First-Leg Recap

Manchester United got off to the perfect start last week after opening the scoring through Bruno Fernandes only to find themselves 2-1 down at the break after Roma capitalised on slack defending. Roma lost three players to injury in the first half, including their goalkeeper, and never recovered. The Italian outfit collapsed in the second half, not helped by a fortunate penalty decision in United's favour, and they ended up losing 6-2. Edinson Cavani and Fernandes both grabbed two each, while Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood capped off a stunning comeback to put Solskjaer's side firmly in control of the tie.

Team News

Roma have lost first-choice goalkeeper Pau Lopez for the remainder of the season following his shoulder injury in the first leg, while Leonardo Spinazzola and Jordan Veretout are also unlikely to recover in time to face the Red Devils. Gianluici Mancini missed the first leg through suspension but is free to return here, likely pushing Bryan Cristante into midfield as a result. Needing a big win to go through, it wouldn't be a surprise if Edin Dzeko had help up front from Borja Mayoral.

Solskjaer's plans for Thursday's return leg have no doubt changed after their game with Liverpool at the weekeend was postponed. With a full week off between games, the United boss can really go as strong as he likes here and with a place in the final at stake, he may well do just that. Anthony Martial and Phil Jones are joined on the sidelines by Dan James.

Key Battle: Chris Smalling vs Harry Maguire

Roma vs Man Utd - Europa League team news and prediction

Chris Smalling endured a return to Manchester to forget last week. The former United centre-back was at least partially to blame for a number of the goals Roma conceded, albeit he was unfortunate to concede a penalty on Edinson Cavani. That result means Smalling has been in a side that has conceded six goals at Old Trafford for and against United. Not a great record to have.

Harry Maguire's arrival at United really pushed Smalling out of the club and supporters will no doubt be happy to have the 28-year-old. Maguire barely misses a minute of action for United, which has really been the club's main problem in defence down the years. Maguire gets unfair criticism at times but has been a solid signing, even if United were forced to overpay for the England international. Maguire should now be eyeing his first final as United captain.

Scoreline Prediction: Roma 1-1 Man Utd
