Assessing Arsenal's successes and failures in the transfer window

Our writers have their say on how Arsenal fared in the January transfer window.

Martin Laurence: The loss of Alexis was huge but Arsenal have at least splashed the cash in an attempt to compensate. Given time Henrikh Mkhitaryan should be well suited to Arsenal’s approach, with former club mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang there to link with up front. The sale of Giroud to rivals Chelsea could backfire.

Overall grade: B-

Josh Wright: January could have been a whole lot worse for Arsenal, but coming out of it with Aubameyang and Mkhitarayn, despite losing Sanchez, is by no means a disaster. It also sounds like Mesut Ozil has agreed terms to a new deal. However, it's debatable whether those players will solve Arsenal's problems, as central midfield, defence and their goalkeeper need evaluating. Strengthening two rivals along the way doesn't sound particularly smart either.

Ben McAleer: It could have been a lot worse for Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez's departure was inevitable, but to get Henrikh Mkhitaryan in exchange, along with his former Borussia Dortmund partner in crime Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, masks the Chilean's exit. That being said, they have strengthened rivals Chelsea with the sale of Olivier Giroud, while Theo Walcott looks to have a new lease of life at Everton. To get Mesut Ozil pinned down to a new contract is a huge boost, however.
