Team News

Sunderland
Stoke
  • David Moyes has real problems ahead of their Premier League clash with Stoke on Saturday. To add to their injury crisis, Sunderland will now be without Lamine Kone, Didier Ndong and Wahbi Khazri for the next month as they take part in the Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Billy Jones and Steven Pienaar are the only injured players with a chance of recovering in time for Saturday, with seven other players definitely sidelined.
  • Mame Biram Diouf, Wilfried Bony and Ramadan Sobhi are all away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Mark Hughes fielded a relatively full strength team in the FA Cup at the weekend and they still lost 2-0 at home to Championship side Wolves, which would have knocked their confidence.
  • With Jonathan Walters out with a knee injury, Peter Crouch may be required to lead the line once again.

Prediction

  • Sunderland always seem to have at least six players missing from selection and that is no different this weekend where they will definitely be without nine players. They are only one point off safety but they need to keep hold of Jermain Defoe to have any chance of beating the drop.
  • Stoke were one of three Premier League sides to go out of the FA Cup at the hands of lower league opposition this past weekend and that would have knocked morale having fielded a strong team at home to Wolves.
  • The Potters have only lost one of their last seven in all competitions and have lost three of their last four. They've lost their last three on the road but they did have to play Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in that time. This game is really in the balance but Stoke should have the edge to get at least a point against a depleted Sunderland outfit.
