Team News

Turkiye
Italy
  • Turkey should be quietly optimistic about their chances this summer. They have players like Burak Yilmaz and Zeki Celik coming off league-winning campaigns with Lille and plenty of talent in Serie A duo Hakan Calhanoglu and Merih Demiral.
  • Marco Verratti hasn't played in either warm-up game for Italy and is still recovering from a knee injury sustained over a month ago. It seems unlikely he will be ready to start Italy's opener against Turkey on Friday.
  • Verratti's expected absence should open up the door for Nicolo Barella and Manuel Locatelli to hold down starting berths either side of Chelsea's Jorginho in central midfield.
  • Lorenzo Pellegrini tweaked a muscle in training on Wednesday and has been replaced in the squad by Fiorentina's Gaetano Castrovilli.
  • Ciro Immobile looks set to get the nod over Andrea Belotti up front for Italy's opening game, while Federico Chiesa and Domenico Berrardi are in competition to complete Italy's front three with Lorenzo Insigne.

Prediction

  • Turkey have only lost one of their last 13 matches and many have tipped them as darkhorses at this summer's tournament. They have drawn with Germany and beaten the Netherlands in that run and also have a recent victory over reigning world champions France.
  • Similarly, many are tipping Italy to make a run deep into Euro 2020 and their progress under Roberto Mancini has certainly gone under the radar. Italy are unbeaten in their last 27 matches, last suffering defeat back in 2018. While they haven't faced too many big nations in that time, it's still an impressive run. Their squad has come on leaps and bounds since the last European Championships with star quality in most positions.
  • As the opening game of Euro 2020, there will no doubt be plenty of nerves from both sides. And while a draw is certainly possible, Italy will surely be looking to get off to a winning side and have the superior squad to do so.
