Team News

Mainz
Borussia Dortmund
  • Mainz's last two games have been postponed after a hefty COVID outbreak. This is the first of those two to be rearranged.
  • 19 players and support staff tested positive, that tally went up to 20 by the start of last week, with three goalkeepers and 11 outfield players reportedly in that number. A probable line up is therefore difficult to predict.
  • What we do know is that defender Jeremiah St. Juste is ruled out with shoulder pain, while back up keeper Finn Dahmen has damaged ankle ligaments and will be out for 4-6 weeks. Alexander Hack and Dominik Kohr did not get infected but are suspended for this one.
  • A COVID outbreak at Mainz forced the postponement of last weekend's game, so Borussia Dortmund have a few key players fitter for the rematch.
  • Gio Reyna and Erling Haaland made their returns as subs on Sunday, while Marco Reus could return from illness. Defenders Manuel Akanji and Dan-Axel Zagadou Zagadou could return to the squad.
  • Raphael Guerreiro and Mats Hummels should return from COVID. Steffen Tigges has broken his ankle and will miss the rest of the season.
  • Mateu Morey remains on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, and former skipper Marcel Schmelzer continues his comeback from a knee injury.

Prediction

  • Seven points behind Bayern, this is Borussia Dortmund's precious game in hand.
  • Robin Zentner has kept eight clean sheets and Mainz have won five in a row at home, before a COVID outbreak stalled their season.
  • Borussia Dortmund, even with the fit-again Erling Haaland, would be wise not to underestimate Mainz, despite their recent spate of COVID cases.
  • Dortmund have failed to score only once in their last 57 Bundesliga games and if this game goes ahead, it is hard to see Mainz being able to field an experienced Bundesliga side so Dortmund should win comfortably.
