Team News

Portugal
France
  • Portugal will be expected to continue with what would appear to be their first-choice starting XI.
  • Adrien Rabiot will have to sit this one out through suspension, having picked up his second yellow card of the tournament against Belgium.

Prediction

  • Portugal went all the way to a penalty shootout in their round of 16 clash with Slovenia, progressing thanks to three fine stops from goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
  • France were the better side, but only sealed their place in the last eight thanks to an own goal from Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen on Monday.
  • In a repeat of the 2016 final, both sides will be battling to progress to the semi-final on what is unanimously considered the tougher side of the draw.
  • It will be tight, but France's attacking prowess could see them edge through, perhaps after extra time.

  • If Martinez was good he would be Spain's coach. I hope Portugal fires him. With so many good Portuguese coaches we have to take it with him. He don't take advantage of the players they have, it was the same circo in Belgium…. very weak !!

  • France is in the semi finals without scoring a single goal out of open play. 5 games = 2 own goals, 1 penalty.

  • @neumi17 That team is so lucky plus their coach and the way they play, I can't stand them. Hopefully Spain will teach them how to play football next week but without Carvajal and a few others IDK they might become the first team to win the Euros without scoring a real goal.

  • embarrassing performance from france regardless of winning the shootout which frankly i didnt expect since portugal are usually the penalty specialists, but fair play to france for scoring theirs. the reason it was embarrassing is because france played like a second grade team, failing to make plays, constantly relying on individuals, booming/forcing balls when there were easier and better options right next to them. honestly it was frustrating to watch. do they know ANYTHING aside from counterattacking plays? if i were deschamps im screaming at my guys as well to frickin calm down when attacking and pressure when defending because what the hell was that. this team of individuals definitely lacked some gamesense/collected playmaking which went down after griezzman's substitution - these subs were also dubious from deschamps. both teams very wasteful and in the end portugals biggest weakness as always was actually finding a goal before ET/pens. for once, they were punished for this.

  • @Icarax Well said. To be honest tho, Deschamps is kinda the one to blame for how they play. Their squad has really good quality in basically every position outside of maybe traditional N9 (but Giroud is still ok for that, or Thuram can play as a Target man if needed), I would argue that they had the best squad going into this Tournament beside Spain and Germany, yet unlike the other two, there is just no fluidity/creativity in how they play. It's kinda like Deschamps puts them on the pitch and tells them to win based on skill alone. Also the way he celebrated after this display doesn't really strike me like someone who is very upset about how their team plays(not just today). Pretty sure France would do much better with a new coach, with modern tactics and more dignity.

  • @DanInter Agreed on every point, but I will give them credit for actually trying to score today. They were 50/50 with Portugal and honestly could have won before 90min if their finishing wasn't so bad. They were both awful in that regard, either team could have won 1-0.

  • Both teams should lose

  • France's games have been the WORST games in this championship. No, not England's games, France's games. All of them!

  • @Sputnik I would argue it's pretty close lol. Both team's games are stuff you could use for interrogation. Thing is France been struggling like this for a while, IDK why no1 questions Deschamps's responsibility in this.

  • halftime thoughts: both teams are allowing a lot of space. very on and off or even totally passive pressing in important midfield areas, in portugal's case its even worse: they back up to their own goal and dont press france just outside the box. on the other hand, france seem pretty panicky, they force passes a bit, which is a shame because when they slow down and combine passes, which they have the quality to do, they seem dangerous. portugal have some good plays up to the final third, where they almost always make the wrong decision and the final pass is to noone. i think its fine to play a little defensive in a match like this but sometimes its a very dumb complacency or overconfidence, some of the french players it feels like they dont believe they can concede and so they dont do their best. you have to be proactive otherwise you'll invite unnecessary pressure and actions. i hope its just nerves and not the managers instructions. rkm & upamecano - liabilities. pepe & saliba great
