Manchester United given boost in attempts to secure De Gea’s long-term future
David De Gea would prefer to stay at Manchester United than join Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain, claims ESPN.
The Spain international’s existing deal is due to after at the end of next season after United triggered a 12-month extension earlier this month.
United have given themselves some more time to secure De Gea’s long-term future but they still have a long way to go to convince the 28-year-old to prolong his stay at Old Trafford.
De Gea is regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world and is happy at United but is concerned about the club’s ability to challenge for major honours.
United have been left behind by their Premier League rivals this season but the United board have at least showed a desire for change after sacking Jose Mourinho on Tuesday.
Juventus and PSG have both heavily linked with a move to sign De Gea but the Spaniard does not particularly favour either of those clubs if he was to depart United.
PSG announced a new long-term deal for Alphonse Areola on Wednesday and a move for De Gea would now seem out of the question.
Real Madrid were the frontrunners for De Gea in recent years but De Gea has missed the boat after the Spanish giants signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in the summer.
De Gea has won United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in four of the last five seasons to underline his importance to the club.
Despite struggling to rediscover his best form for United this season, only three goalkeepers have made more saves than De Gea (61).
