Stoke City have broken their club-transfer record to land Xherdan Shaqiri for £12m from Inter, the Premier League outfit has announced.
The Potters failed in their attempts to sign the 23-year-old earlier in the summer when Shaqiri missed the deadline to respond to their offer. They have now successfully revived the deal, with the Swiss winger signing a five-year deal.
Shaqiri arrives as Mark Hughes second high profile signing of the summer following the acquisition of former Barcelona midfielder Ibrahim Afellay and goes down as a real statement of intent by Stoke.
The Switzerland international has struggled to make an impact on the domestic scene having proved such an impressive outlet at the World Cup in 2014. In fact, of players to make more than three appearances in Brazil, only Karim Benzema (6.2) averaged more shots per game than Shaqiri (5).
