Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has dismissed reports claiming captain Jose Fonte could be about to leave the club.
It had been reported by Sky Sports News that Aston Villa were sounding out a potential move for Fonte, but Koeman rubbished those links during his press conference on Thursday.
“He is our captain, he is a very strong defender and he is a club man like Kelvin Davis,” the Southampton boss is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
“I don’t think for one second about selling him. He is out captain. There is no way we will sell him.”
Fonte, who only signed a new deal until 2017 last year, emerged as one of Koeman’s most consistent performers in the Premier League last season, gaining a WhoScored rating of 7.20, and it would have been a real surprise to see the 31-year-old leave.
In fact, no player made more interceptions in the Premier League last season than Fonte (119).
