Van Dijk set for Southampton stay

Virgil van Dijk will stay at Southampton, ending the speculation surrounding his future at the club, reports Sky Sports.

The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move away Saints for much of the summer, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City all interested in the centre-back.

Liverpool were the frontrunners to secure his services, even after Saints threatened to report the Reds to the appropriate authorities as they believed their prized asset was being tapped up by the Merseyside outfit.

The 26-year-old has been training away from his teammates in recent weeks having handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force a move away from St. Mary’s.

Van Dijk is yet to make a competitive appearance for Saints under Mauricio Pellegrino and hasn’t featured for the club since sustaining an ankle injury back in January.

The Dutchman could now return to first team duties for the south coast side after the international break when Saints face Watford next month.
