Southampton captain trying to lure former starlet back to club
Southampton captain Jose Fonte is trying to persuade Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to return to Saint-Mary’s, according to The Daily Mirror.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 22, is currently sidelined with a knee injury and his future at Arsenal is in doubt following an underwhelming campaign.
Southampton are one of a number of teams monitoring Oxlade-Chamberlain’s situation in north London and their captain, Fonte, has weighed in on the pursuit of the versatile midfielder.
The England international still has two years remaining on his current deal but has fallen down the pecking order in recent years, with 19-year-old Alex Iwobi now ahead of him.
Despite failing to significantly kick-on since leaving Southampton for Arsenal in 2011, no player to have made 15 appearances since the start of last season has required fewer minutes per successful dribble than Oxlade-Chamberlain (20.3 mins).
