Barcelona plot shock move for former midfielder

Barcelona are interested in re-signing Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu six years after letting him leave the club, reports The Sun.

Romeu, who only made one league appearance for the Blaugrana during his seven-year stint at the club, left Barcelona to join Chelsea in 2011 after his style was deemed widely out of sync with the club’s philosophy.

The 25-year-old isn’t particularly pleasant or graceful in his role as a defensive midfielder but he has been hugely effective for Southampton this season and was even rewarded with a new long-term deal in January.

However, that seemingly hasn’t deterred Barcelona from registering their interest in the former midfielder as the club seek reinforcements in central midfield to ease the burden of shielding the defence currently carried out by Sergio Busquets.

No player has won possession more times in the midfield third in the Premier League this season than Romeu (145).
