Egypt vs Uruguay Confirmed XIs - Liverpool star absent

Egypt head coach Hector Cuper has opted against naming Mohamed Salah in the starting XI for the Pharaohs’ opening World Cup match with Uruguay.

Salah hasn’t featured for club nor country since being forced off with a shoulder injury in Real Madrid’s 3-1 Champions League final win over Liverpool.

It had been touch and go as to whether he’d be fit to make Egypt’s World Cup squad, with the Reds’ star able to secure his spot in Cuper’s squad.

However, despite being passed fit to feature against Uruguay, Cuper elected against calling on Salah from the off in the Group A encounter.

Salah, who today turned 26, will hope to make an impact from the bench against La Celeste as Egypt know they need a result if they are to secure a place in the next round of the World Cup.

Russia made a storming start to the tournament on Thursday as they romped to a 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia.
