Tottenham extend Alderweireld’s contract

Tottenham have extended Toby Alderweireld’s contract by 12 months but now risk losing one of their best players for £25m next summer, reports The Daily Mirror.

Alderweireld’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season but Tottenham have now exercised a clause in his deal to extend it until the summer of 2020.

The Belgium international has developed into one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

Alderweireld fell out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino last season after failing to agree a new long-term deal at Tottenham has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United since.

The 29-year-old was a top transfer target for Jose Mourinho last summer but United refused to match Tottenham’s staggering £75m asking price.

United are reportedly still interested in Alderweireld despite sacking Mourinho earlier this month and could now sign the defender for as little as £25m in the summer.

As part of triggering Alderweireld’s contract by 12 months, Tottenham have also activated a £25m release clause that will be available for a two-week period in the summer.

No outfielder averages more accurate long balls per Premier League match than Alderweireld this season (8).
