Liverpool to continue splashing the cash with deadline day splurge

Liverpool remain interested in completing a £74m deal for Thomas Lemar, despite the impending arrival of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal, reports the Independent.

The Reds’ interest in the Frenchman was reported over the weekend, though it looked as though they would pull out of the race for the youngster as they closed in on a £40m deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, despite the impending arrival of the England international, Liverpool remain keen on wrapping up the signing of Lemar on deadline day.

Monaco are loath to losing the France international following the departures of Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko, but know they can command a top fee for the 21-year-old.

And Liverpool are confident they can complete the deal for Lemar before tonight’s 11pm deadline as Jurgen Klopp looks to improve his midfield options.

The Merseyside outfit this week confirmed a deal is in place that will see Naby Keita move to Anfield next summer, but Klopp is still eager to bolster his squad, especially with reports continuing to link Philippe Coutinho with a move to Barcelona.

Lemar has picked up two assists in Ligue 1 this season, while the young attacker as registered more assists from set-piece situations (7) than any other player in France’s top tier since the start of the 2016/17 campaign.
