Burnley rebuff Wolves’ approach for Tarkowski

Wolves have had an enquiry for Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski knocked back, claims The Times.

Nuno wants to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season to help deal with their new European commitments.

Wolves could have played three Europa League qualifiers before the Premier League season even starts and getting new quality through the door is vital for the club.

Tarkowski has developed into one of the best defenders outside the top-six in the last few years and Burnley are determined to fend off interest in the England international.

Burnley only paid £3m to sign Tarkowski from Brentford in 2016 and with three years left to run on his current deal they are in a strong position over negotiating his fee.

Leicester are also keen on Tarkowski this summer but will only move for the 26-year-old if they fail to keep hold of Harry Maguire amid interest from Manchester United and Manchester City.

In the last two Premier League campaigns, only Shane Duffy (106) has blocked more shots than Tarkowski (99) and only the Brighton defender (407) has made more headed clearances (Tarkowski - 281).
