AC Milan ramp up interest in Chelsea midfielder

AC Milan chiefs Paolo Maldini and Leonardo have sounded out Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas as a potential transfer target in January, claims Calciomercato.

Milan have an injury crisis on their hands and are expected to dip into the January transfer market in order to maintain their pursuit of a top-four finish in Italy this season.

Fabregas has been heavily linked with a move to Milan over the last 12 months but now Gennaro Gattuso’s side believe they have a real chance of landing the former Spain international next year.

The 31-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his current Chelsea deal and is unlikely to be handed a new contract unless he agrees to a drastic pay-cut.

Fabregas has dropped out of favour under new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri this season and will have to leave if he wants regular playing time during his best remaining years.

Milan are also considering January moves for former Roma midfielder Leonardo Paredes and highly rated Celta Vigo ace Stanislav Lobotka but believe Fabregas is the most accessible.

Only PAOK midfielder Jose Canas (120.5) averages more passes per Europa League match than Fabregas (102.7) this season.
