Napoli are on the verge of announcing Dries Mertens has agreed terms to a new five-year deal that will keep him at the Serie A outfit until 2021, reports Gianluca Di Marzio.
Mertens, 29, has been in sublime form for Napoli in recents weeks and has really stepped up in the absence of Arkadiusz Milik, who is his way back from a serious knee injury.
The Belgium international has mainly been used as a substitute for Napoli since joining the club from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 but has already started nearly twice the amount of games this season (10) than he managed during the whole of the last campaign (6).
Mertens’ existing deal is due to expire in 2018 but that is set to be extended by a further three years and will even include a release clause that could be as much as €50m (£42.6m), although that will only become active during the second year of his new deal.
With 11 goals to his name in Serie A this season, Mertens is already enjoying his joint most prolific campaign in one of Europe’s top five leagues, having not managed to score this many goals since his debut campaign with Napoli in 2013/14.
