Manchester United defender set for shock new deal

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to reward Marcos Rojo with a new contract at the end of the season, reports The Sun.

Rojo didn’t appear to have any future at Old Trafford when Louis van Gaal was sacked at the end of last season following two hugely underwhelming seasons at the club.

The Argentina international was one of several players at the club that Jose Mourinho was expected to move on last summer but not only has Rojo worked his way into contention but the United manager now wants to extend the defender’s stay at the club.

Rojo’s partnership with Phil Jones around the turn of the year was one of several contributing factors behind United’s resurgence and their form even persuaded Mourinho to put their pursuit of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in the January transfer window on hold.

The 27-year-old’s existing deal isn’t due to expire until 2019 but Mourinho wants to reward the former Sporting defender with another 12 months on his current £100,000-a-week deal.

No player has completed more clearances for United in the Premier League this season than Rojo (118).
