West Ham announce £10.2m arrival of Robert Snodgrass

West Ham have confirmed they have won the race to sign Robert Snodgrass from Premier League rivals Hull City in a deal worth £10.2m.

Snodgrass, 29, was heavily linked with a move away from Hull all month after rejecting an offer of a new contract at the club at the turn of the year prompting interest from five other Premier League clubs.

West Ham had already failed with a number of bids for the Scotland international before being forced to match Hull’s valuation of their star performer after Burnley had swooped in with the full sum.

However, Snodgrass was only interested in joining the Hammers and has completed a January switch to east London on a three-and-a-half-year deal keeping him at the club until 2020 after being unveiled as the club’s new No.11.

“I’m delighted because this is a massive club with great tradition,” Snodgrass told the club’s official website. “This is the sort of club which speaks for itself, the fans who come here and support week-in week-out and moving to selling out this new stadium is terrific and I want to be part of it.

“The owners and the manager are trying to build something here and I just can’t wait to get started. I feel this is a club with real ambition, with the new stadium, great players and a manager of his calibre at Premier League level.

“The lads will say we want to be up in the top half of the table and repeat last year, so it’s up to us. The club has had a few good weeks with results and if I can add to that, great. I’m just looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting started.”

Snodgrass’ deal is expected to trigger further activity in the January transfer market with Dimitri Payet edging closer to securing a £30m move back to Marseille after telling West Ham he wants out of the club this month.

What is West Ham’s gain is certainly a huge loss for Hull and a massive dent in their bid to beat the drop. Snodgrass has played a direct hand in 10 league goals for the Tigers this season and only the goals scored by two other players had won their clubs more points than Snodgrass (7 points earned).
