Aston Villa have announced the arrival of Jota from city rivals Birmingham with Gary Gardner moving in the other direction on a permanent deal.
Dean Smith has moved to reunite with Jota after bringing the best out of the 27-year-old during his time at Brentford.
Jota is the first new arrival at Villa since winning the Championship play-off final last month and several more additions are anticipated.
Villa maximised the loan market to help gain promotion to the Premier League but are unlikely to retain most of those players for the upcoming season.
Jota, who has reportedly cost Villa in the region of £4m, in addition to Gardner moving to Birmingham, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal running until the summer of 2021.
“I worked with Jota at Brentford,” Smith told the club’s official website. “He’s a superb, talented player and Birmingham signed him as their transfer record.
“I’m really happy to have him back working with us. He’s got great ability, great balance and a great eye for both goals and assists.”
Jota played a direct hand in 14 league goals for Birmingham last season (three goals, 11 assists) but it was at Brentford under Smith where he really flourished.
The Spaniard scored or assisted 17 goals in 21 league appearances for Brentford prior to securing a £6m move to Birmingham in the summer of 2017 (12 goals, five assists).
