Atletico Madrid ace signs new five-year deal

Atletico Madrid have announced Jose Gimenez has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal running until 2023.

Gimenez’s previous contract was due to expire in 2020 and the Uruguay international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years.

The 23-year-old has struggled for regular playing time in the last two seasons but has now been given assurances about his place in the team under Diego Simeone.

“I’m so happy, I really appreciate the club’s confidence in me,” Gimenez told the club’s official website.

“Since I arrived at the club we have grown so much, we have won important titles, we have consolidated between the great times in Europe, we have a brand new stadium and it is an honour that they bet on me and to be able to keep contributing to the growth of this great project.

“Miguel Angel Gil has shown me the confidence that the club puts on me in a conversation in a Montevideo. Gestures like these can’t be forgotten and this made it easy to take this decision.

“We have a fantastic group that is the key to all of our sports success and since I arrived here I feel like home, that’s why I want to give my best to thank the confidence shown.

“Also, I want to thank the fans for their support, it is very important for me. It’s something that my family and I wanted.”

Gimenez’s release clause has been increased to €120m (£105.7m) under the new terms in his contract and his renewal casts serious doubt over the future of Stefan Savic.

The Montenegro international has emerged as a summer transfer target for Juventus and Chelsea and both would have been given encouragement with news Gimenez has pledged his future to the Atletico.

Since August 2016, Atletico have a better win ratio in La Liga when Gimenez has not started (63.8%) compared to when he has featured from the off (55.2%).
