Sampdoria midfield duo shine in Serie A Team of the Week

The big news in Serie A over the weekend was that Napoli’s draw with Fiorentina allowed Juventus to stretch their lead at the top of the league to three points. However, gameweek 27 wasn’t just about the movements at the top of the table, but there were also crucial results at the other end of the ladder as well.

A run of eight games without a win had pushed Sampdoria straight into the relegation and defeat to fellow strugglers Frosinone at the weekend would have seen them enter the bottom three. Instead, however, they secured their first home win of 2016 to move five points adrift of the drop zone.

Fernando, who features as the Serie A Player of the Week, scored his first league goal since the opening day of the season and is joined in the Team of the Week by his midfield teammate Joaquin Correa.

Not only did Fernando open the scoring, but he was also denied a second by the woodwork and also created a joint-high three chances in the match. The 23-year-old also carried out his usual midfield duties, making more tackles and interceptions combined than any other player on display at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium (9). To cap off a dominant performance in the middle of the park, he only misplaced six of his 61 passes (90%).

Correa, meanwhile, playing in a more advanced central position, completed four dribbles than the entire Frosinone team combined (9) during his 77-minute performance. In fact, that feat has only been bettered by two other players in a Serie A match this season (both 10).
