Boca Juniors to plead for Barrios stay

Boca Juniors are pleading with Wilmar Barrios to postpone any possible move away from the Argentina champions until January, with Tottenham linked, reports the Independent.

The Colombian is expected to play a key role at the World Cup this summer with Spurs keen to wrap up a deal for the midfielder.

Boca, though, are prepared to offer Barrios a new deal that would significantly boost his wage that would see him stay in Buenos Aires for their upcoming Copa Libertadores campaign.

The 24-year-old has a £14.5m release clause in his contract with Boca hoping to keep their squad together for the competition, with Cristian Pavon also linked with a move away.

Barrios had previously insisted he will stay with Boca before linking up with Colombia’s World Cup squad, but his stance has supposedly changed, with the youngster playing alongside Spurs centre-back Davinson Sanchez for the national team.

Spurs are eager to land a new midfielder this summer, though face interest from La Liga side Real Betis, but it’s the Premier League side who are the frontrunners for his signature.
