Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has labelled the £58m the club has paid to secure the services of Anthony Martial as “ridiculous”, reports The Times.
Martial, 19, was made the world’s most expensive teenager when he joined United late in the transfer window from Monaco for an initial £36m, which is can rise up to £58m with bonuses.
However, despite admitting the fee to be “ridiculous”, the United boss says the signing is one for his successor, which he believes will be his assistant, Ryan Giggs.
“I have not bought Martial for me, I have bought him for the next manager of Manchester United,” Van Gaal said while looking at Giggs during an hour-long fan session. “I feel I am introducing the next manager of Manchester United.”
Since the start of last season, no teenager has scored more goals than Martial (9), a player that has been dubbed the next Thierry Henry.
