Paris Saint-Germain wanted to sign me, says Villarreal striker
Villarreal striker Cedric Bakambu has revealed Paris Saint-Germain tried to sign him in the summer as back-up to Edinson Cavani.
Bakambu, 25, previously spent eight years in France before eventually plotting his way to Villarreal, with whom he has been with since 2015 after joining from Turkish side Bursaspor.
The DR Congo international impressed last season in his debut campaign for Villarreal and his performances led PSG to consider a move for the striker before eventually signing Real Madrid forward Jese as cover for Cavani.
“Paris contact me to be Cavani’s backup,” Bakambu told ESPN. “Obviously there were two pursuits [the other being Jese].”
Bakambu has only started four league games this season but has contributed with two goals, as he looks to find a place in the starting XI with competition from Roberto Soldado and summer signings Nicola Sansone and Alexandre Pato.
Since the start of last season Bakambu has scored at least six more goals than any other Villarreal player in La Liga (14).
